The Advantages and Limitations of Low-Cost Single Frequency GPS/MEMS-Based INS Integration

Global Positioning System (GPS) provides a method for directly obtaining instantaneous position and velocity estimates using satellites-based passive range measurements. GPS is whole day, all-weather, passive, satellite positioning system. Inertial Navigation (INS) navigation aid system that uses computer Measurement Unite (IMU). IMU includes motion sensors rotation to continuously calculate relative position, orientation, velocity. The integration of GPS/INS can help overcome the limitations two systems providing integrated better than either on stand-alone basis. low-cost INS with dual frequency has been widely studied same tactical grid GPS. However, during last few years, number GPS\low-cost have introduced become popular in various engineering applications. reliable investigations into advantages, quality such level are still needed more efforts required, which will be focus this paper. methodology followed paper evaluating depends individually comparing results show single receivers able provide comparable accuracy both static kinematic carrier phase differential (DGPS). As Micro-Electro-Mechanical (MEMS)-based IMU, accelerometers provided instability gyros. performance gyros improved based modelling nearly-linear behaviour gyro drift. Tests MEMS-based degrades measurements may not add any improvements individual positioning.
